By way of some background to the color thesaurus and the color
zeigeist, I think it is interesting to do a quick visual example
demonstrating the difference between using names versus numbers for
color.
Looking at the example below consisting of six colored squares,
how do the patches correspond to the table of red, green and blue or
RGB values in the table above the patches? Take as much time as you
need but try to keep track of how hard or easy it is to do this task.
Now compare the above example to the one below that includes
a row for color names. How do the color names correspond to the colored
patches? How do the color names correspond to the RGB values? Is it
easier or harder to use the names or the numbers?
Hopefully it is clear that the example above with the names
is easier to interpret than the example without the names. Below you
can see arrows that connect the colored pacthes with the corresponding
RGB values and names. In this case they are backwards.
So you can probably think of other examples but I suspect
for any given color space like RGB, CMYK, CIELAB and so on a list of
numbers is a lot less intuitive than a list of names. Stated a
different way I suspect there is no color space or color encoding that
exhibits a Stroop effect.
