These are exciting
times. Not surprisingly, press and industry analyst response to HP’s
announcement of a definitive agreement to acquire EDS
has been both massive and mixed.
Whether pro or con, every article I’ve read reports on the surge in profits
since Mark Hurd joined HP three years ago. Because of that success, I suppose
it only stands to reason that we’re facing some skepticism. Plus, the story
wouldn’t be as compelling if every reporter and pundit agreed with our positive
outlook. That said, it’s hard not to prefer coverage like Fortune’s “Big Tech”
Blog by Jon Fortt, “Why
HP is smart to gamble on EDS” …

“It turns out you have two choices: You can try to control people, or you can try to have a system that represents reality. I find that knowing what's really happening is more important than trying to control people” ~ Larry Page, NY Post, 8/24/04
In my prior posts, I focused on: what MPS is (definition), how to build a solid plan or output strategy, and most recently, a discussion of assessments as part of the process for developing a data driven business case for change.
One question I often get from MPS customers, users and sponsors is how to keep something they have started “on track” and ensure that the results expected from an endeavor like MPS are realized … |

I’ve heard it can get
really hot and humid in Texas, but when I
arrived in San Antonio
earlier this week, the temperature
was mild. That didn’t last long. Now I know what they’re talking about – by
4:00 this afternoon the temperature is supposed to be up to 96 degrees, and
with the humidity factored in, it feels more like 105.
But even in this air-conditioned meeting space,
the HP Enterprise Sales Leadership team is hot. (Sorry -- bad pun -- it must be
the long hours, the intensity of this awesome event and all the travel time
I’ve been logging lately) …

It’s show
time, again. This week, I’m in San Antonio, Texas, home to the Alamo,
the Spurs, the River
Walk and the HP Imaging and Printing Group’s 2008 Sales Leadership
conference. It’s phenomenal to be here with HP’s Imaging and Printing
Enterprise District Managers from around the world. I’m hearing straight from
the proverbial horse’s mouth: What are
our customers’ greatest challenges? What are the trends they’re seeing? Are
security, compliance, the environment and cost
cutting still hot button issues for customers?

Today my PR
partners across the hall, over in the land of “small to medium” (SMB) business marketing,
announced a new offering from HP that is so cool, I just have to share.
Normally, we wouldn’t be writing about something for SMBs on this blog, but if
smaller businesses start using this new tool from HP, they might find
themselves moving up into the land of the giants very soon. (HP defines an SMB
as a company with less than 1,000 employees, and enterprise
companies are those that have more than 1,000) …

Greetings
from Austin, Texas
The April
’08 edition of “Austin Monthly” was
also the publication’s second annual green issue: “The people, places & ideas that are
greening the world.” Just like every other city in the nation (I hope!) my fair city is all over
this green thang. Austin-based retail
and grocery chain, Whole Foods
is about to ban plastic bags and the city launched an awareness campaign called
“Austin’s Got a
Brand New Bag.” So what does all this
have to do with enterprise printing? I
was inspired by a little blurb in the reader feedback section of the magazine
about a weblog called www.changethemargins.com
…

Glad to be home after a two week
whirlwind of travel and meetings with enterprise customers and industry
watchers in Budapest and Shanghai. The two events were awesome and the
meetings I had with customers left me motivated to do more. We see so many
opportunities for enterprise customers to save money and improve their business
processes, just by assessing their imaging and printing environment…

Jim Lyons, who writes the monthly “Observations” column for Lyra’s “Hard Copy Observer” newsletter, blogged about the announcement today.
Jim – the products are very important to us and we will continue to keep innovating!
During the customer panel I previously wrote about, it was great to hear how our customers are not only taking advantage of the features and benefits provided by our LaserJet printers and MFPs, but are seeing new ways to improve paper-based workflows… |

I had the privilege of moderating a panel with some of our SMB and enterprise customers at the Office Printing ’08 event. HP CEO Mark Hurd has said that everything we do must be for our customers - and if it isn’t - we should question why we are doing it.
The customers on today’s panel represented a wide range of printing environments, but they all had one thing in common – they are living and breathing Print 2.0. The attendees included Matthew Campbell, Adcorp Holdings; Rodney Gooch, Castle Combe Racing School; Charles Page, Imperial College, London; Martin Thorburn, Barkham Office Furniture; and Malek Zanzouri, 3M…

“Statistics show that of those who contract the habit of eating, very few survive.” -George Bernard Shaw
In my last post, I laid out a six-step process for building an effective strategy to move to a more managed print/copy/fax environment. Step three was “get a baseline of information to make the plan”.
When most people read step three - get a baseline of information- they think “do an assessment” or “do an audit”. Over the years a wide array of offerings from small to large companies has sprung up to fill that need. Many multifunction product vendors (HP included) offer assessment services to assist customers in figuring out the basics – what do I have, how much is it costing me and what should I do about it … |

Last week I attended a conference called Eco:nomics, hosted by the Wall Street Journal. Presenters including California Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger; General Electric CEO, Jeffrey Immelt; and Wal-Mart CEO, H. Lee Scott, shared their CEO-level views on the environment and the bottom line. HP was one of four main sponsors (along with Intel, General Motors, and Scudder). To see more info on the event that took place last week, go to http://www.economics.wsj.com/. To see more blogging from thought leaders, check out http://blogs.wsj.com/environmentalcapital/.
The Wall Street Journal conference and the HP Enterprise Advisory Council (EAC) meetings I attend-- two in the U.S., two in Europe, one each in Canada, Latin America and Asia -- have given me a newfound appreciation for the challenges of managing and communicating around environmental issues. Our enterprise customers are deeply concerned about environmental stewardship – not only their own, but that of their suppliers. At the same time, they’re concerned about how to effectively communicate their good works without being accused of “greenwashing.” … |
