HP Tops Nielsen's Super Bowl Ratings With 100 Million Viewers

Published 12 February 2007, 10:18 AM

HP topped the ratings during CBS' telecast of the Super Bowl, according to Nielsen Media Research. Our OCC ad was the highest rated commercial minute in the game, drawing 99.5 million viewers at 9:25 p.m. A Toyota Tundra spot was No. 2 with 99.1 million viewers at 8:55 p.m., and a FedEx spot was third with 98.2 million at 8:58 p.m.

Commercials from CareerBuilder.com and Doritos had the highest same-day DVR playback. CareerBuilder also saw the biggest traffic boost to its Web site from game day through Monday, with an increase of 148%, Nielsen said. HP's Web site traffic boost was second with a 74% gain. Bud and Bud Light commercials had the biggest online "buzz," combining for 20% of all post-game online discussion, the ratings company said.

Check out the Orange County Choppers ad. Make sure to also check out the “behind the scenes” footage on HP TV. And of course build your own customized OCC video!

What was the price of this presence? Dupont commissioned a marketing study of its sponsorship of Wil Steger's Antartica crossing in 1991. They had 4.7 Billion media hits before widespread usage of the internet. What do you think, Wil Steger's 2007 Artic crossing will net in media hits? Mr. Steger has been trekking the poles for 40 years. He is the Jacque Costeau of the poles. If Jacque Costeau were calling, would HP pick up? Doubtful. Well, Wil Steger is calling, and HP can participate as the technology sponsor of the next three expeditions for Mr. Steger. So far this blog my be the only way in. Sir Richard Branson is accompanying Mr. Steger with his son for a portion of the trip. ABC News is following the entire expedition. Free National Geographic lesson plans for students and teachers to track the crossing with daily text and images from the trek. Wil was the first to use the internet for this type of education event in 1995. A major motion picture documentary is being produced by Mr. Branson. Do you think there might something here for HP? www.globalwarming101.com. Wil leave's tomorrow evening. I can't get him on the phone until then. Maybe here's a chance for HP to score a major low cost hit. OK. That's all I got for now. Somebody in your organization is sitting on this. I hope you can see it for you companies sake. alanhoffmann@sbcglobal.net
