The Coolest Job on the Planet

Published 10 July 2007, 04:54 PM

I am starting a new job today at HP as Vice President, Marketing for our Digital Photography and Entertainment businesses. Think digital cameras, photo compact printers, Snapfish, retail photofinishing and DVD on demand. I am very excited by the tremendous growth opportunities in all these businesses for HP and by the market disruptions that digital technologies provide us. I look forward to leveraging my customer centricity and web 2.0 experiences to compete with the likes of Kodak.

So here are my recommendations for your summer vacation shopping:

- Digital camera r937 (available this summer): this 8-megapixel camera has the largest touch screen interface (3.6inch) of ANY camera on the market. This allows you to apply creative touches, easily tag photos, add e-mail addresses for easy sharing and create slide shows – all in the camera. The digital camera includes the latest HP Design Gallery features such as in-camera red-eye removal, pet-eye fix and the famous slimming feature. Don’t forget to buy a few accessories!

- HP Photosmart 475 Compact Photo Printer: This compact printer is the only printer of its kind: it allows you to store up to 1,000 photos! It also lets you print true-to-life 5 x 7" photos, as well as 4 x 6"s and panoramas.

- Snapfish: register for the best value in photography (12c each 4x6 print) and benefit from the summer sale with 30% off all gifts

- Visit our Photosmart studios, for example at Albertsons in Huntington Beach. *Update* - Find the HP retail photo service closest to you to quickly create fun photo products www.hp.com/go/retailphotoservices

- Download a few movies at Walmart.com

The obvious next question is: what should I do with this blog? I welcome your thoughts, suggestions, feedback, and advice on the following questions:

- What topics should I cover? Web 2.0 marketing, digital photography trends, our new products and ventures, all of the above?

- Should I be more “aggressive” in challenging competitive claims?

- Which name shall I give this blog?

I cannot wait to hear your thoughts.

“Congrats! I'm so pleased for you ;-). I do think featuring Web 2.0 and digital photography trends will be well-received by readers. For corporate blogs it's great to be able to balance industry news/market shifts with company developments...seems like the right 'balance'. I'll give thoughts to fun names--but for now go pop some bubbly and enjoy your achievements! - CK”

Congrats Eric! That does sound like a great job. i think a lot of people are interested in digital photography trends which currently are not well covered. leave the product blogs to engadget and gizmodo and blog about trends, how-tos, and so on. The name will come to you, and I'm sure it'll be great. Best of luck in the new gig. B.L.

Eric, Welcome! You are definitely in a cool job. For people to find an HP retail photo service (HP Photo Center and HP Express) near them to quickly create fun photo products (posters, calendars, photo books, prints, etc.), they can go to the RPS locator at the following URL: www.hp.com/go/retailphotoservices

Congratulations!! I'm with Debbie on one hand -- the Marketing Excellence blog has been a great way for people to look inside the strategic thinking at a major global firm, so I wouldn't want you to change too much, get too "producty." That said, I definitely think there is a place for more HP outreach and engagement around digital photography, but not sure your blog is the right place. Just my .02, you need to stay strategic, not get too tactical.

¡Felicitaciones! This is a very exciting market you're into now, congrats. I think most people will love to hear about all the new ways that the web enhances the photography and video experience. Maybe mix it with some behind-the-scenes look at the technology in this products and services, explained in a simple way. =) PS: About Snapfish, most people think that you have to register in order to see other people's shared photos because of the way the invitation arrives. I've hear of many people that didn't want to use it because of this. A little re-design of the invitation would be great. PS2: Hmmm... We need one of those kiosks for the office. Ha ha.

Congrats Eric! I knew there was another reason why the Marketing Excellence Blog made the cut for our BIGLIST of marketing blogs last week. :) I think the blog offers an excellent opportunity for you to present a window into HP DP through your personal perspective, whether it's insight into strategic direction and trends or your own opinions related to products.

Congrats! Given that you'll be responsible for some new types of media, you might consider adding in more photos and video here. It would definitely bring things even more to life. I'm looking forward to hearing much more about your efforts to integrate channels and provide a great customer experience!

Congratulations Eric...waaaay cool! I agree with Pete, definitely make it multi-media. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. I would suggest you keep your blog name...add a tagline! Something edgy...from the digital edge. Best of luck!

Eric - adding my congrats! Not only a cool gig for a cool dude but sounds like blast. How about some 'behind the scene' posts on how social media is helping with product development and marketing? Doing any BR? Would love to learn about that too (smile). Since you're still responsible for marketing, why change the title of the blog? But as Marianne pointed out a new tag line and some photos might help reinforce "cool."

Hi Eric, Sounds like a fantastic gig. This is what you wrote as a comment on my blog in the early days of your blog. It was a comment regarding blogging frequency, but it also relates to your reasons for blogging: (http://www.mokummarketing.com/blog/2006/07/20/success-defined-by-your-goals-not-someone-elses/ ) I would rather reach 10 of our best customers, 10 analysts and 10 top marketing bloggers. They will actually do a far better job of spreading my thoughts than I would by posting frequently. Question 1: is that still your goal, or do you want to reach a mass audience? Question 2: if this is still your goal, what do you think they want to hear? I think they want to know why you make the decision you are making, your insights into the industry, how you get to your conclusions and ideas. Don't start selling, whatever you do... Strategic, insight into why HP does what it does, how it sees the future of your particular area of responsibility. Congrats on the new gig and I'll hang around to see what you will be writing about. Always enjoy it. Cheers, David

Welcome to DPE. I have another summer vacation shopping recommendation that is also an important part of DPE and that is one of our excellent B-size photo printers. It is the perfect printer for all those vacation travelers to make enlargements up to 13" x 19" of their favorite trip memories.

Wow thanks to all for your great comments and suggestions! I agree with Marianne and Pete on the multimedia side. Content wise there seems to be a fairly commom view of a mix of web 2.0, digital photography trends, new intros, behind the scenes, etc. Still need to find a name, I have never been a huge fan of marketing excellence - sounds too corporate to me! :) Pls keep the ideas coming on that front. Eric
