Cherie Nowlan’s family should be so proud. The Australian director of Clubland is not only a talented filmmaker, but she’s also sweet, humble, and polite, just like everyone’s mom wants them to be.

Nowlan sat down with me to discuss how thrilled and honored she is to be here at Sundance. She said she believed when she submitted her film that she had “zero chance” of actually being accepted. She calls it a “dream come true” to be here.
The movie Clubland is a story about a mother letting go of her son as he comes of age sexually. The movie stars Brenda Blethyn and introduces two newcomers to the big screen: Khan Chittenden as her son Tim and Emma Booth as the Tim’s girlfriend.
Nowlan said she absolutely called on her own experience with her mother when she directed the movie. She said if she herself isn’t in the story, then she’s “not doing my job.” Fortunately, her parents were able to let go – and encouraged her when she was a child with a dream to be a director. She says she always knew this is what she wanted to do.
When I asked Cherie what she hopes to achieve with this movie, the humble director said, “I just want the audience to love it.” Personally, I can’t wait to see it.
