Wow, I’ve been a Facebook guy for about 3 months now… how time flies when you’re making friends! The press on who might purchase or invest in Facebook has been fascinating to watch as well. But I continue to come back to “what is Facebook?” “Am I connecting with friends?” “Am I more up-to-date on others?” and “how can this be utilized for media/marketing?”
Facebook for me hasn’t really been a connection point for my close friends. It’s been a point of contact for business associates, who I know on varying degrees of scale. Some I know very well, others are business folks who want to connect to me, I truly wish I was connecting with other friends from days past, but they haven’t gotten on the Facebook bandwagon, so it’s not happening still. I just don’t feel comfortable sending out emails inviting people to join Facebook. So that’s probably part of the issue in getting others on board as well.
With Facebook’s unique feature of providing updates on what folks are doing I do feel like I’m involved in a community. Frankly, that’s actually pretty cool. To see what folks are like and what they’re into.
And, I check my Facebook account 3 or so times per week, which surprises me. I guess the community aspect is keeping me engaged.
Companies that can take advantage of the community aspect I think can make hay. Sponsoring areas, providing education, information (non-sales type stuff), etc., I think would go over well.
