» Your computer: A platform, an appliance, or a browser?

I've been thinking about how different people use their computers. It occurs to me that there are at least three different ways that people use their computers: as a platform, as an appliance, or as a browser.  How do you use your computer?

» An odd passenger

I just flew from San Francisco to Singapore. I have a confession. On this trip I did something that I never did before- I brought my Sony PlayStation Portable with me... and I played it in public on the plane!

» Hyperstimulated at HP

Sorry I've been away from blogging for a while. It's not because of a lack of ideas... It's the opposite. There are so many exciting things going on that I'm hyperstimulated- there's so much to write about!

» Social web technology gone bad: Questioning anonymity

I love how social web technology gives everyone a voice. But what do we do when people abuse the freedom that social web technology has given them? Take a look at Alex's story... Should anonymity be allowed in the social web?

» It's a multilingual world- I feel so left out!

I am very fortunate that the nature of my job lets me meet and work with fantastic people from all over the world. One thing that many of these people have in common is that English is not their first language, some-other-language-that-I-don't-understand is...

» Are we communicating if we bypass our senses?

sqchen raised a very thought-provoking comment in my last post. He raised the possibility of having a communication chip implanted in you brain that allows you to automatically communicate with other people through their communication chips "without bothering our eyes", or more generally, without bothering our senses. Read on for more...

» Today's communication experience: How far we've come

Alex wrote a very interesting post on sharing our lives in little pieces. He talks about how various new web technologies allow us to share pieces of our lives in different ways, instantly and easily. This reminds me of my mom handwriting letters to her parents back in Korea using "air mail"...

» Rotating blog post styles

I've been blogging for a few months now, so I'm probably still in the "finding my voice" phase. One thing that I've been doing is changing things up by rotating styles between a serious post, a silly post, a technology post, a research post, a management post, a teamwork post, a sports post, and so on. Does this defy conventional blog wisdom?

» Watching mobile video in bed

Some researchers in my lab did an interesting study on how people use mobile video. One of their findings was that people like to "watch mobile video in bed". Needless to say, this sound bite usually sparks an energetic discussion. Well, it does in the US and in Europe. But, I often get a puzzled look with Asian audiences. One of my researchers in Japan helped me understand why...

» Aliens invade 3GSM Barcelona

In an earlier post I said that a group of creative researchers in my team are demo-ing a Mediascapes game at 3GSM 2007 in Barcelona. Here is a brief description of the game written by Phil Stenton of the HP Labs Mediascapes team: Aliens have invaded Barcelona in HP Labs’ latest mediascape experience. Now you can enter the comic book world of science fiction with the aid of science fact from the mScape team. Armed with the HP iPAQ 5900 Travel Companion, you can save the planet by rescuing the only man who knows how to defeat the invaders. Free him from his alien captors and help him eliminate the digital shift that is the source of the aliens’ power. Read on for more details...

» I'm gonna be a gamer again!

There's a change in the industry that's going to make me a gamer again. It's based on the fact that motion sensors are going mainstream, and this is making games more intuitive to play. The profile of "the gamer" is going to change significantly. And, if the games are designed right, I think my mom and dad are gonna be gamers, too!
